3,677 sex abuse cases in German Catholic Church

More than 3,600 children in Germany were assaulted by Roman Catholic priests between 1946 and 2014, a leaked report has revealed.

Its convening signals awareness at the highest levels of the Catholic Church that clergy sex abuse is a global problem, not restricted to some parts of the world or a few Western countries. Most of the victims were boys.

About one in six of cases documented involved rape and three quarters of the victims were abused in a church or through a pastoral relationship with the abuser.

Spiegel Online and Die Zeit said the report they obtained concluded that the majority of victims were boys aged 13 or younger, 969 of whom were altar boys.

The study was carried out by a team of investigators from three German universities-Mannheim, Heidelberg, and Gießen-under the auspices of the German Bishops' Conference.

The study also noted that some records had been "destroyed or manipulated", warning therefore that the scale of the abuse may be even greater.

How has the Catholic Church reacted?

"Four years ago we commissioned the study and we bishops in particular are facing up to the results".

The German Bishops' Conference was expected to present the "strictly confidential" study's findings later this month, Der Spiegel said. Again, I emphasize: "The study is a measure that we owe not only to the Church, but above all, and first and foremost, to those affected".

It came after a grand jury report detailed seven decades of abuse in the USA state of Pennsylvania.

Last month, a grand jury in the USA state of Pennsylvania released the findings of the largest-ever investigation of sex abuse into the Catholic Church in the United States, finding that 301 priests in the state had sexually abused minors over the past 70 years.
