More than 1,200 police officers kept watch over the rival rallies in the eastern city of Chemnitz, where deep divisions have flared up since the killing of 35-year-old Daniel Hillig six days ago, allegedly by two Iraqi and Syrian men.

Thousands of people were expected to attend a free, open-air concert in the city Monday meant to send a signal against hatred and anti-migrant sentiment.

According to statistics from the Federal Criminal Police Office, reported by local TV channel Welt, out of 731 cases of homicide and manslaughter in Germany in 2017, 83 were cases in which Germans were killed by foreigners.

"If once again people are parading today in the streets making Nazi salutes, our past history forces us to resolutely defend democracy".

More than 27,000 people have registered their intent to attend the "Wir sind mehr" - "There are more of us" - concert in Chemnitz.

Gabriel called on the domestic intelligence service to start watching the Alternative for Germany, or AfD, party, which was voted into national parliament a year ago.

"An entire state and its people are vilified here in general because there is a distinct and understandable resentment about the circumstances", Joerg Meuthen, AfD co-chief said at a street festival in Bavaria. "I don't think things will calm down anytime soon".
