White House Invokes Executive Privilege On Vast Cache of Kavanaugh Documents

The supreme court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh has not been "normal", a Democrat on the Senate judiciary committee said on Sunday, because the Trump administration is withholding more than 100,000 pages of records concerning the judge's time as an aide in the White House of George W Bush.

The Trump administration cited presidential privilege as the basis for its decision.

Bush's attorney Bill Burck told the Senate Judiciary Committee in a letter Friday that it has mostly completed its work ahead of next week's planned confirmation hearing.

"It's not normal", Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota told NBC's Meet the Press, "because we are not able to see 100,000 documents because the administration has said we can't see them, exerting their executive power".

In remarks on "Fox News Sunday" about high court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's position of the ruling that legalizes abortion, the South Carolina Republican said he "wouldn't vote for anybody that says that every decision [of] the Supreme Court can not be revisited... through a process... of overturning long precedent".

Ms. Klobuchar, who voted with fellow Democrats in 2013 to trigger the "nuclear option" and curtail the filibuster, said she would support reverting to the 60-vote rule should her party regain the Senate.

Republicans said Democrats are reaching for objections. What are they trying so desperately to hide?'

Ms. Klobuchar was the only senator to make such a request, he said - and those documents were released Friday.

"I have heard very few people say that the limits on contributions to candidates are unconstitutional, although I for one tend to think those limits have some constitutional problems", Kavanaugh wrote to his Bush White House colleague Helgard Walker in a March 6, 2002, email, CNN reported.

The judge was deeply skeptical of Congress' ability to impose restrictions, calling limits on outside groups "blatantly unconstitutional" - a position the Supreme Court eventually took as well when it struck down the restrictions.

Schumer's office said it was the first time in history a president has used executive privilege to block the release of presidential records to the Senate during a Supreme Court nomination.
