Yankees add Andrew McCutchen, reinstate Gary Sanchez in series of roster moves

Friday afternoon, the Yankees swung a trade with the Giants that sends Andrew McCutchen to NY for two prospects.

Thus, with Aaron Judge ailing and Giancarlo Stanton in danger of being overworked, the team agreed to a deal to acquire Andrew McCutchen from the Giants.

The Yankees have had a no facial rule - technically, it is no facial hair below the lip rule - for decades now, since George Steinbrenner was in his heyday.

The Yankees could use another outfielder and have never been shy about bringing in big names. He was a five-time All-Star with Pittsburgh and the 2013 NL MVP. San Francisco tried to deal McCutchen before the July 31 deadline, but were unable to do so.

Meanwhile, Stanton has played in 83 straight games, while Judge's replacements in right field, including Shane Robinson and Neil Walker, a veteran infielder pressed into service, have struggled at the plate.

McCutchen is hitting.255 with 15 home runs, 55 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in his first season with the Giants.

The Yankees began the day 7 1/2 games behind Boston in the AL East and 4 1/2 games in front of Oakland for the top wild-card spot.

In order for a player to be eligible for a team's postseason run, trades must be final by Friday.

McCutchen is making $14.75 million this season, but the Pittsburgh Pirates picked up $2.5 million of that in the trade that sent him to San Francisco. The 23-year-old, who has played both shortstop and second base this year, has split his 2018 season between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre; combined, he's put up a.287/.333/.446 line with 15 homers, 25 stolen bases, and 36 extra-base hits.
