At least eight people have died as a result of a tractor-trailer's head-on crash with a almost packed Greyhound bus in northwestern New Mexico, officials said.

New Mexico State Police say the semi was headed east when one of its tires blew, sending the rig across the median and into oncoming traffic where it slammed into the Greyhound bus. Almost every person on board was transported to hospital, CBS reported.

Greyhound's intercity buses have provided budget travellers an affordable way to see America for almost a century.

State police said all but six people were taken to local hospitals but did not provide further details on injuries.

Around 5:40 p.m., the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque confirmed to The Arizona Republic that five patients had been admitted and five were en route.

Other passengers were being treated at hospitals in the Gallup area, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) from the crash site.

Some patients were expected to undergo surgery Friday and Saturday. They also have not said how many people were killed or how many were injured. The driver of the semi-truck suffered non-life threatening injuries, reports said. The truck was on its side with debris scattered over the highway and a nearby median.
