Barcelona name Lionel Messi new captain to replace Andres Iniesta

Andres Iniesta's departure from Barcelona has ensured that the club need to select a new group of captains, with Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto named amongst the newly announced list.

Iniesta ended a career-long association with the Catalan giants at the end of the 2017-18 season, joining Japanese side Vissel Kobe.

Lionel Messi will wear the famous armband having been the official vice-captain since 2015.

Messi, who was named Barcelona's second captain in 2015, will now replace Barca's former icon, Andres Iniesta in the role.

The third and fourth captain vacancies, which have opened up due to Iniesta and Javier Mascherano's exits, will be filled by Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto.

All four of the captains chosen came through the club's La Masia youth academy and only Pique - who had spells with United and on loan at Real Zaragoza - has played senior football away from Camp Nou.

Messi remains Barcelona's all-time top scorer and the recipient of no less than five Ballon d'Or awards during his time at the club.

Roberto takes over as the fourth captain, filling the gap left by Messi's global team-mate Javier Mascherano following his move to Hebei China Fortune in January.

Roberto's elevation is in spite of his only being a first team regular for three seasons.
