Extra-inning rule gets minor league team win despite no hits, walks

Clearwater took advantage of a rule introduced this year that places a runner at second base at the start of each extra inning to cut down on marathon games.

There are many problems with this new rule, chiefly that people who stick around to watch extra innings aren't the ones turning the game off for being slow - they already made it to extras. Not to mention, if a game is in extra innings there's probably plenty of drama and reason for folks watching to stick around for the end.

The minor leagues' new extra innings rule led to a freakish victory for the Clearwater Threshers on Monday night.

Christian Morris replaced Garcia for the eighth, and Clearwater automatic runner Luke Williams quickly went from second to third when shortstop Diego Castillo dropped the ball during a rundown. Clearwater's next two batters finished off the inning with a groundout and a strikeout.

The ending ruined a no-hitter pitched by Yankees prospect Deivi Garcia, who delivered seven flawless innings and 12 strikeouts before giving way to Christian Morris in the eighth. The Tarpons were unable to rally in the bottom of the eighth despite starting the inning with a runner at second. Morris took the loss despite also pitching a ideal inning.

During the second game of a doubleheader - Clearwater won the first - the Threshers and Tarpons were both scoreless following the seventh inning.
