Lenovo delivers the first Google Assistant smart display

The long awaited launch of the Google Assistant powered Lenovo Smart Displays has finally begun, with Google announcing they're now widely available at stores and online in the US.

Google is officially launching its Smart Displays platform today.

"Lenovo has priced the 8" model at USD$149.99 (around AUD$204) while the 10.1" display is selling for USD$229.99 (around AUD$312). The Smart Displays are powered by a 1.8GHz Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM and come with 4GB of on-board storage.

One of the cooler features, in my opinion, is the option to get step-by-step cooking recipes with Google Assistant.

Outside of the kitchen, these displays will still support regular Google Home/Google Assistant features, like schedule and agenda management, calendar appointments, custom shopping lists, video calling, and Google Photos playback.

More or less, a Smart Display is a Google Home with a screen for richer media experiences. The display can also stream live or recorded YouTube TV shows, YouTube Music, HBO Now, Google Play Music, Spotify and Pandora.

Google isn't saying when other Smart Display products from its partners will be available - but the Lenovo Smart Displays are available today, with the 8-inch HD version going for $199.99, and the $10-inch FHD variant going for $249.99.

Google has said the Smart Displays are now only available in the USA through Walmart, BestBuy.com, Amazon.com, Costco.com, SamsClub.com, Lenovo.com and other stores.

The Smart Display also makes for a natural hub for the smart home, with the touchscreen making for a better interface at times than voice alone and, of course, the ability to bring in visuals from a Next Cam or Nest Hello Doorbell.
