Skywatchers looking forward to complete lunar eclipse

Chandra Grahan or Lunar Eclipse 2018 tonight LIVE UPDATES: During this rare phenomena, the Moon will turn bright red and it will be visible in India as well.

Famous for its stream of Elon Musk's vehicle floating through space, the site will show the Blood Moon from its perch on Palatine Hill, and kicked off at 2.30pm EDT (7.30pm BST). The apogee moon will make the lunar eclipse appear 13 per cent smaller than average.

At what time will you see the blood moon in India? During the phenomenon, the moon appears red as it is illuminated by sunlight filtered through the Earth's atmosphere, hence the term "blood moon". Some light, though, will still reach it because it is bent by the earth's atmosphere.

What time will you be able to see it? In Malmö and Stockholm this will happen at 9.15pm, in Gothenburg 9.30pm, Umeå 9.45pm, Östersund 10pm and 11pm at the northernmost tip of Sweden, Treriksröset. For four hours, it will be partly in the Earth's shadow.

The totality, which, you may recall, is when the Earth's shadow covers the moon and casts the world into darkness, will last one hour and 43 minutes.

As with most such night-sky events, the best place to see it is out in the country away from lights. It is to note that the eclipse won't be visible to viewers in North America, except via webcasts.

Dr Edward Bloomer, also an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, said: "Although Mars being in opposition is a regular event, the elliptical orbits of the planets mean the distance between them can vary quite a bit".

What is the weather forecast?

No glasses are needed for the lunar eclipse due to its dimmer colour. The eclipse will continue till 4.58 am, though the effect will not look as great.

The longest lunar eclipse of this century will coincide with Mars' closest approach to Earth in 15 years on Friday.

In fact, in the Book of Revelation chapter 6 verses 11 - 13, where verse 12 says: "And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great quake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood".
