Netflix Greenlights Locke & Key Series Adaptation

The Netflix series was developed by Cuse, Aron Eli Coleite and Averill, and the first episode was penned by Hill and Coleite. However, Netflix will be redeveloping and recasting the series. The original pilot was written by Cuse and Hill before Hulu passed, prompting the changeover and rewrite.

It director Andy Muschietti, who helmed the Hulu pilot, is working on the film's sequel, so he will not be available to direct the new version for Netflix. But he will be on board as an executive producer.

The streaming giant ordered 10 episodes of the series, which is based on the IDW series by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. But all was not lost: Netflix made a decision to give the series a shot, and now, they're making it official. We'll find out who, if any of them, stick around for the Netflix series. Now, as reported by Deadline, Locke & Key is officially the property of Netflix, Inc. More than five years later, Hulu began developing the project with Hill and Cuse, though they too passed on the pilot. With recent film and TV producers blurring the lines between superhero tropes and horror elements (as seen in Preacher, Outcast, and the upcoming Sony blockbuster Venom, to name just a few), IDW's Locke & Key seems a flawless candidate for breakout success. There, they discover magical keys that give them a wide array of powers and abilities. Following that, a television series was in development at FOX in 2010 (which was even given a series order, but never went forward after the pilot was produced), and finally a failed film adaptation with producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci in 2014 with Universal Pictures. The Locke family returns to the house, built by one of their ancestors, after their father's death. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys, and will stop at nothing to attain them.
