People Injured After 'Lava Bomb' Hits Roof of Hawaii Tour Boat

Harrowing video shows the moment a volcanic explosion caused molten rock to barrel through the roof of a sightseeing boat off Hawaii, injuring 23 people.

The Coast Guard now prohibits all vessels from getting closer than 984 feet from where Kilauea volcano's lava oozes into the sea.

A woman in her 20s was transported to Honolulu in serious condition with a broken thigh bone, while the other injured people were treated for minor burns and scrapes.

The stricken 49-passenger-seat vessel, dubbed Hot Spot, was later videotaped maneuvering to its dock after passengers were unloaded.

Wednesday's blast sparked by the gradual collapse of the volcano's crater was equivalent to a 5.3 magnitude natural disaster and caused lava to burst from a fissure 40km east, destroying at least one home in Leilani Estates, the US Geological Survey (USGS) and Hawaii County Civil Defense said.

Levasseur said that after Monday's incident, the Coast Guard would strictly enforce its 300-meter buffer zone exclusively.

In an early morning tweet, the U.S. Geological Survey said the increase produced a small overflow, threatening homes on Nohea Street, and additional overflows downstream on both sides of the channel.

The lava flows destroyed more than 700 homes across Hawaii since the volcano first erupted in May as lava continues to flow and the volcano continues to erupt.

A gaping hole could be seen in the boat's roof after it returned to Wailoa Harbor, the Hawaii County fire department said.
