Russian woman charged with spying in the US

According to a LinkedIn page for a Maria Butina with a profile picture that resembles pictures of her from news stories, Butina has been a research assistant at American University's Kogod School of Business in Washington, D.C., since October 2017.

The government claims that between 2015 and February 2017 Butina "worked at the direction of a high-level official in the Russian government", who was sanctioned by the USA in April 2018.

Court papers say Butina worked on behalf of an unnamed Russian official to influence senior USA politicians and develop relationships with other political organizations between 2015 and 2017.

On Oct. 4, 2016, an unnamed US person sent an email to Butina that stated, "U$3 nrelated to specific presidential campaigns, I've been involved in securing a VERY private line of communication between the Kremlin and key POLITICAL PARTY 1 leaders through, of all conduits, the [GUN RIGHTS ORGANIZATION]".

He said: 'The substance of the charge in the complaint is overblown, ' and insisted Butina only wished to network with Americans.

Butina voluntarily testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee for 8 hours "months ago", Driscoll said, and produced "thousands of documents" to the lawmakers.

29-year-old Maria Butina has been arrested in the U.S., accused of acting as an agent for Russian Federation.

Ex-minister calls for second Brexit vote

The FBI agent who signed the affidavit against Butina claims she was working to establish a back-channel between the Kremlin and the National Rifle Association (NRA).

United States media have previously reported her ties to the National Rifle Association (NRA), the most powerful gun lobby in the US. The official was not formally named in the indictment but appears to be Alexander Torshin, who was previously a member of the Russian legislature and was later a top official at the Central Bank of Russia. In April, the USA sanctioned Torshin and a number of other officials close to Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Court papers do not name the Kremlin official.

Multiple senior law enforcement officials say Butina was under investigation for some time and was arrested Sunday because they believed she would soon move.

A Russian woman living in Washington, D.C., was charged with conspiracy to act as a Russian agent, the Justice Department announced Monday. "More likely to come on this; no wonder GOP members of [the House Intelligence Committee] refused our request to bring her and others in".

In a November 2016 tweet, Torshin boasted that he and Butina were the only lifetime members of the NRA from Russian Federation.

Butina and Torshin did, however, have brief interaction with Donald Trump Jr., who has said the interaction was brief and not memorable, the Post reported.
