Lawsuits Alleging Roundup Causes Cancer To Advance

Now a federal judge has ruled that there was sufficient evidence for a jury to hear the case that the company's weed-killer, still sold across the United Kingdom, is causing cancer.

U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria said Tuesday that plaintiffs could present expert testimony linking the product to the cancer, the Associated Press reported. The lawsuits by cancer victims and their families say the agrochemical giant long knew about Roundup's cancer risk but failed to warn them.

Monsanto says in court filings that glyphosate has been deemed safe by "every major regulatory agency".

In a statement, Monsanto Vice President Scott Partridge said the company would "continue to defend these lawsuits with robust evidence that proves there is absolutely no connection between glyphosate and cancer". Still, the opinions of three experts linking glyphosate and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma were not "junk science" that should be excluded from a trial, the judge ruled. An email to an attorney for the plaintiffs was not immediately returned.

He spent a week in March hearing from epidemiologists and other doctors.

Former groundskeepers Dewayne Lee Johnson filed the lawsuit in 2016 after he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Toronto Raptors Current Favorites To Land Kawhi Leonard
Boston and Philadelphia are the favorites to make the Finals, though adding Leonard could make the Raptors more competitive. That certainly plays in favor of the Lakers, as Leonard has stated that's where he wants to play.

But the judge also said some of the expert opinions presented so far in the case are "shaky".

The company Monsanto faces 5,000 lawsuits across America as it's alleged that one of their products, Roundup - which is still sold in the United Kingdom - can cause cancer.

Roundup, made by USA giant Monsanto, is sprayed on gardens and parks and is used by farmers producing food crops. Homeowners, meanwhile, used Monsanto Roundup on their lawns and gardens.

The herbicide came under increasing scrutiny after the France-based International Agency for Research on Cancer, which is part of the World Health Organization, classified it as a "probable human carcinogen" in 2015.

The weed-killer contains glyphosate, a chemical that the US Environmental Protection Agency ruled was not carcinogenic in September. A draft report by the agency previous year concluded the herbicide is not likely to be carcinogenic to people. The report noted that science reviews by numerous other countries had reached the same conclusion.

"The scientific evidence is overwhelming that glyphosate-based products do not cause cancer", stated Monsanto attorney George Lombardi.
