PayPal tells woman her death violated account policies, apologises

In other words, PayPal had sent a threatening letter to Mrs Durdle telling her that her death was in breach of its policies. As Motherboard reported in 2016, at least in the U.S., debt collectors have become adept at harassing recently bereaved families of the dead to put them in contact with estate administrators or even personally repay debts, even when they have no legal obligation to pay up. Her husband, Howard Durdle, informed PayPal of her death last month.

According to a report by The Next Web, Lindsay Durdle's widower Howard Durdle wrote about the ordeal on Facebook and Twitter.

PayPal sent the letter to Mrs. Durdle, the deceased, explaining that she was "in breach of condition 15.4 (c)" of her agreement.

Instead of an acknowledgement, he received a reply addressed to Mrs Durdle, stating that she owed £3,200 and warning: "Important: You should read this notice carefully".

We are not required to give any further notice before taking such action, however we do understand that you may be experiencing financial difficulties and are eager to help.

PayPal had stated that a person's death is a 'breach not capable of remedy'. The online payments system has apologized after mailing a letter to a woman in the United Kingdom three weeks after her death was reported to the company, CBS Seattle reports.

He said: 'I'm a member of the charity Widowed and Young, and I've seen first-hand in there how a letter like this or something like it can completely derail somebody. "We are urgently looking into this matter, and are in direct contact with Mr. Durdle to support him".

According to the BBC, Paypal staff told Durdle that this was not supposed to happen, that it was either the result of a bug, bad template, or human error, and written off the debt in the meantime. He was told the company would deal with it but couldn't learn details because it was an "internal matter".

He continued: "If I'm going to make any fuss about this at all, it's to make sure that PayPal, or any other organization that might do this kind of insensitive thing, recognizes the damage they can cause the recently bereaved".

Realizing how insensitive this was for her husband, PayPal changed its stance with a spokesperson for the company informing Mr Durdle they are reviewing what happened "as a priority" and that, "We apologise to Mr Durdle for the distress this letter has caused".
