U.S. job growth strong but unemployment rate rises to 4%

Nonfarm payrolls rose by 213,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department said on Friday. Professional and business services, manufacturing, health care, construction, and mining all added jobs in June.

The unemployment rate rose as an additional 601,000 Americans entered the labor force, meaning a strengthening labor market appears to have actually coaxed some workers back into the labor force.

The annual increase in average hourly earnings remained unchanged at 2.7%.

The job growth shows the labour market shrugging off worries about a slowdown triggered by trade fights or rising borrowing costs.

The report also shows that the share of workers who have multiple jobs remained stable over the a year ago at 4.8 percent.

The organization's latest numbers show Alberta's capital had an unemployment rate of 6.6 per cent in June, up 0.1 per cent from the previous month.

The decline in the unemployment rate was driven by an increase in employment; the region added slightly over 10,000 jobs between May and June, according to the federal statistics agency.

Canada's tight jobs market is beginning to bring more workers into the labour force, a trend that if sustained may moderate a recent pick up in wage pressures. But for now the sector, which accounts for about 12 per cent of the USA economy, appears in good health. It was 14.5 per cent in May, but 15.5 per cent in June.

Oregon's jobless rate remained near an all-time low, 4.1 percent, in May. But retailers cut 21,600 jobs last month, after boosting payrolls by 25,100 in May.

The previous record was 4.8% back in 1973.

The U.S. economy faces potential drags going forward, including escalating trade disputes with major trading partners such as the European Union, China, Canada and Mexico. On Thursday, Trump floated the prospect of imposing tariffs on more than $500 billion in Chinese imports. Trump has spoken about slapping tariffs on imported cars, trucks and auto parts, which General Motors has warned could hurt the USA auto industry and drive up vehicle prices. Restaurants added 16,400 jobs in June, under the average of 18,400 over the year.
