Laura Bush: Child Separation at Border 'Cruel'

Melania Trump, U.S. First Lady, has called on both Democrats and Republicans to join forces to stop federal authorities from separating children from their parents when apprehended at the border.

In under 24 hours, all five living first ladies spoke out against the Trump administration's lightning-rod "zero-tolerance" immigration policy of separating families at the border. Then, after her spokesperson, Stephanie Grisham, said that Melania absolutely hates this policy she then went on to go ahead and do what most Republicans have also done and, basically, blame the Democrats for making this problem.

About 2,000 children have been separated from their parents or guardians over six weeks, according to USA authorities, since the Trump administration announced that all migrants illegally crossing the Mexican border would be arrested, regardless of whether the adults were seeking asylum.

But while her comments may run counter to the president's, some have said they don't go almost far enough to counter false statements made by the White House and merely echo an inaccurate claim that Democrats are responsible for the separations.

The president continued to falsely blame Democrats for the policy that separates kids from their parents and declared that the U.S. will not become "a migrant camp".

Former First Lady Laura Bush said coming from Texas, she understands the need for border protection. It is immoral. And it breaks my heart. In a guest column for the Washington Post, Bush compared the separation of the children to the internment camps for Japanese-Americans in World War II.

"This zero-tolerance policy is cruel".

Adults who illegally crossed the border could be charged and placed in jail, away from their children.

The public outcry in the wake of images and stories of the children caught in the middle of Trump's controversial immigration policy has sparked fierce debate in the US.
