Roller coaster derails, drops 2 riders 30 feet; 6 injured

Two people fell from a roller coaster that derailed at the Boardwalk at Daytona Beach on Thursday night, according to the Daytona Beach Fire Department.

Two of the four people in that vehicle fell 34 feet to the ground, Daytona Beach Fire Spokeswoman Sasha Staton said.

Other riders were rescued by firefighters who carefully used extension ladders to save them. Staton said she did not know the extent of their injuries.

"The other two were dangling from the front auto", said Daytona Beach Fire Department spokesperson Sasha Staton.

In a Twitter update, crews said six people are in the hospital for care.

A Halifax Health Medical Center spokeswoman said the hospital received nine patients from the accident. "Their well-being and recovery is of the utmost importance", said Jennifer Meale, spokeswoman for the state's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Half of the riders were in a auto climbing up the main hill of the coaster, and the other half were inside a vehicle about to plunge down the coasters 90-degree drop.

She also says the cause of the accident is being investigated.

Three cars on the ride at the Daytona Beach Boardwalk came off their tracks at around 8.30pm, according to the Daytona Beach Fire Department.

News 6 WKMG reported a vehicle on a coaster derailed at an amusement park on the Daytona Beach Boardwalk.

"We noticed it wasn't just a normal banging of the roller coaster going down the track, that's what made us look up".

The Daytona Beach Fire Department shared video of firefighters rescuing those stuck in the roller coaster.

"It was chaotic, as you can imagine, there was a lot of people in the area, " Staton said.

But the ride seemed too bumpy the last time he tried it, and after Thursday night's derailment, he made a decision to never try it again. "I'm not riding on that thing again".
