Kellogg's Honey Smacks Recalled Amid Salmonella Outbreak Investigation

Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal has been linked to a salmonella outbreak in 31 states that has caused illness in 73 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The cereal has a "best it used by" date from June 14, 2018 through June 14, 2019. Check your home for the recalled cereal and throw it away, or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. So far, 60 people in five Midwestern states have been ill, and 31 of whom were known to have been hospitalized.

"This is based on preliminary evidence linking the cereal to an outbreak of illnesses across the country", said Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Scott Gottlieb in an agency brief. No deaths have been reported, according to the CDC.

Also on Friday, the FDA posted a more detailed list of foreign countries where Kellogg distributed the recalled Honey Smacks cereal.

It's the second multi-state salmonella outbreak announced by health authorities in two weeks, following a warning issued earlier this month linked to pre-cut melons.

Trump tells G7 leaders that Crimea is Russian
Trump made the remarks at the White House in response to reports this week that said officials are exploring a meeting. The American President noted that "it would be better if they (Russian officials) were here".

NY has reported seven cases, while California, Pennsylvania and MA have had five cases each.

Salmonella bacteria are the main cause of infection that leads to an illness called salmonellosis.

Cut watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe, as well as fruit salads containing these melons have all been recalled from stores in those states.

Boxes of the cereal likely made their way to Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Guam, Tahiti, the Caribbean and Saipan.

People infected with salmonella can experience severe illness, though symptoms may vary. Most people recover in four to seven days.
