Recruitment boost for NHS amid moves to relax curbs on…

It now sets a limit for all non-EU skilled workers at 20,700 people a year.

Javid is expected to announce on Friday that for a limited time, doctors and nurses from outside the European Union won't count toward the "tier 2" visa cap of 20,700 people a year. It relates to certificates of sponsorship which are applied for by United Kingdom employers looking to bring in non-EU skilled workers.

The cap, introduced by May when she was interior minister, is now set at 20,700 non-EU skilled workers per year.

RCGP chair Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard said the announcement is "a fantastic and much-needed victory for common sense and patient care".

Earlier in the month, Practice Business reported on home secretary Sajid Javid's BBC interview, in which he said he hoped to review the immigration policy with regard to the tier 2 visa cap restricting global doctors from working in the UK.

He said he would take "think more carefully" about the cap on the number of skilled workers given visas.

Stokes-Lampard said: "While we await the details of the home secretary's expected announcement, lifting the cap of tier two visas for doctors and nurses wanting to work in the NHS would be a fantastic and much-needed victory for common sense and patient care, and something that the college, along with organisations across medicine, has been pushing hard for".

The Home Office added that Mr Javid is expected to lay changes to the tier 2 visa cap before Parliament tomorrow.

After his comments on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, a spokesman for Mrs May said that visa routes were "always under review" and it was monitoring the situation.

By excluding doctors and nurses from the limit, more visas will be available for other highly skilled occupations, such as engineers, IT professionals and teachers.

"But perhaps this is a sign that Home Secretary Sajid Javid is willing to take a bolder and more flexible approach to immigration, and deliver the kind of system that Britain will need after we leave the European Union".

Sunder Katwala, director of the immigration think-tank British Future, said removing medical personnel from the visa cap would be a "sensible move". Our workload is escalating both in terms of volume and complexity, yet despite the Government's pledge for 5,000 more family doctors by 2020, the number of Global Positioning System working in the NHS in England is actually falling'.

"It's the right short-term fix for 2018".

Home secretary Sajid Javid, who promised to put in place a fairer immigration system instead of what is called the policy of "hostile environment", said: "I recognise the pressures faced by the NHS and other sectors in recent months".

Whether Javid will prove to be a new broom at the home office remains to be seen.
