Melania Trump 'had big operation and can't fly for a month'

President Donald Trump has added to the intrigue surrounding his wife Melania's recent absence from the public eye following a kidney procedure.

Trump told reporters as he left the White House on Friday for the G7 meeting in Quebec that Mrs Trump wanted to join him at an annual summit of leading industrialised nations, as she did past year, but that she "can't fly for one month".

The outing was her first public appearance in nearly a month following a kidney operation.

She underwent surgery at Walter Reed hospital on May 14 for what aides called a "benign" kidney condition and was released on May 19. After the procedure, Mr. Trump told the public that his wife would be home from the hospital in two to three days; she ended up staying for five.

Mrs. Trump appeared with her husband at FEMA headquarters on June 6 where they attended a 2018 hurricane season briefing.

"She went through a little rough patch, but she's doing great".

The Fake News Media has been so unfair, and vicious, to my wife and our great First Lady, Melania.

Mrs. Trump did not make any public remarks at the event. "Right there", pointing up to the White House from the driveway.

"We don't know if it was a complication of the original procedure - whether they had to actually go in for a surgical procedure - but it does seem to be more serious than originally told to us". Out of concern for her privacy, Stephanie Grisham, Trump's communications director, forcefully pushed back on speculation, telling CNN at the time, "I am not going to expand beyond the statement I put out".

"I see the media is working overtime speculating where I am & what I'm doing", the first lady tweeted last week. The First Lady looks forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children everywhere.

"Thank you, Melania. She's doing great". On Monday night, the first lady made her first White House appearance when she attended a private event to honor Gold Star families.
