Moving an ad from Instagram to Amazon sounds like a simple resizing exercise. It is not. The two platforms ask the creative to do different jobs: Instagram interrupts a scrolling audience, while Amazon meets shoppers who are already comparing products, prices, and reviews.

That difference changes everything from the crop you choose to the words you put on the image. A strong Instagram ad can be a poor Amazon ad if it hides the product, promises something the product page cannot prove, or relies on text that disappears when the asset is reduced to a small shopping placement.

Start with the campaign objective and placements, not with a single canvas size.

The first decision: one campaign idea or one finished file?

Keep one campaign idea, but create more than one finished asset. Your message might be “a compact coffee maker for small kitchens,” yet the execution should change by placement. A vertical Instagram Story needs room for a full-screen composition. A feed ad needs a readable subject at a smaller scale. An Amazon creative needs the product and its context to survive automated cropping and a commerce interface around it.

That is why I would not begin by designing a 1:1 square and asking every platform to “make it work.” Square is useful as a source format, but it is not a universal solution. Design the master concept first, then build intentional crops from it.

Instagram ad sizes beginners should prepare

Meta’s current guidance supports a range of aspect ratios for Instagram Feed, from landscape 1.91:1 through vertical 9:16, with at least 1,080 pixels on the relevant sides recommended for high-resolution uploads. Meta also recommends 1,080 × 1,920 pixels for full-screen Stories creative. See the official Instagram Feed design requirements before exporting because placement rules can change.

Instagram placement Practical starting canvas What the design must survive
Feed square 1:1, such as 1,080 × 1,080 px Small-screen viewing and a tight crop
Feed portrait 4:5, such as 1,080 × 1,350 px More vertical presence without becoming full-screen
Stories or Reels 9:16, such as 1,080 × 1,920 px Interface overlays, captions, and fast mobile viewing
Feed landscape 1.91:1, such as 1,200 × 628 px Reduced vertical impact and wider composition

These are working canvas examples, not a substitute for checking the live Meta Ads Guide. The ratios and minimums above are based on Meta guidance retrieved in October 2026.

For a beginner, the most useful set is usually a 1:1 version for flexible feed use, a 4:5 version for more feed real estate, and a 9:16 version for Stories and Reels. Keep the subject, logo, offer, and call to action away from the edges. On vertical placements, reserve breathing room for the account name, controls, captions, and other interface elements.

A simple publishing plan prevents the wrong crop from being uploaded to the wrong placement.

Build the creative around a safe area

A safe area is the part of the image where important information is unlikely to be covered or clipped. It is not a single universal measurement because the surrounding interface differs by placement, but the principle is consistent: do not put the price, product name, face, or button-like instruction directly against an edge.

  • Place the main subject where it remains recognizable after a crop.
  • Use large type with strong contrast; a sentence that works on a laptop may fail on a phone.
  • Keep one primary message per asset instead of turning the image into a miniature landing page.
  • Export a clean version without registration marks, editing guides, or accidental placeholder text.
  • Open the exported file on a phone before publishing it.

If you need a quick starting point for layouts, an advertisement maker can help you create alternate aspect ratios. Treat the template as a production aid, not as a reason to use identical typography and cropping everywhere.

What changes when the ad reaches Amazon?

Amazon is not one ad placement. Sponsored Products are typically product-listing ads that send the shopper to a product detail page, while Sponsored Brands can use a logo, headline, and multiple products. Amazon’s beginner guide to sponsored ads recommends Sponsored Products as a practical starting point and explains that they can use automatic or manual targeting.

There is an important creative implication: you may not need to design a traditional banner for your first Amazon campaign at all. Sponsored Products use the product listing and its marketplace context. If the listing has a weak title, unclear images, poor availability, or an uncompetitive offer, extra ad design will not repair the underlying conversion problem.

For responsive eCommerce creatives, Amazon says advertisers can submit custom images in three useful shapes: square 1:1, tall 9:16, and wide 1.91:1. Its current recommendation includes 1,200 × 1,200 pixels for square, 900 × 1,600 pixels for tall, and 1,200 × 628 pixels for wide assets, with a minimum source of 600 × 600 pixels and a maximum file size of 5 MB when using its cropping tool. Check the Amazon Ads responsive eCommerce creative specifications for the latest requirements.

Instagram versus Amazon: the useful translation

Creative question Instagram Amazon
Who is seeing it? A person browsing content and discovering an idea A shopper searching, comparing, or revisiting a product category
What should lead? The hook, visual contrast, or lifestyle benefit The product, its differentiating feature, and a credible shopping context
Where does the click go? A destination selected in the campaign Often a product detail page, Store, or approved shopping destination
What can go wrong? The ad is skipped before the message lands The ad earns a click but the listing fails to convert

This is the point where many cross-platform campaigns break. A lifestyle image that creates curiosity on Instagram may be too ambiguous on Amazon. Conversely, a product cutout that makes sense in a shopping result may feel lifeless in a social feed. Keep the visual identity consistent, but let the platform determine what gets the first five seconds of attention.

A beginner’s publishing workflow

  1. Choose one objective. Decide whether the campaign is for awareness, traffic, leads, or sales. Do not judge every platform by the same metric.
  2. Write the destination promise. The headline in the ad should match what the viewer finds after clicking. Avoid a discount, feature, or product variation that the destination does not clearly support.
  3. Create the master composition. Keep the subject, background, brand treatment, and core message in layers so you can reframe them.
  4. Export platform versions. Make the Instagram 1:1, 4:5, and 9:16 versions first. Then create Amazon’s square, tall, and wide versions where the campaign type supports custom images.
  5. Check every crop at final viewing size. Look for cut-off products, unreadable type, blocked faces, and important information too close to the edge.
  6. Upload and preview. Use the platform’s preview tools. Never assume that the file name or aspect ratio tells you how the live ad will look.
  7. Launch a controlled test. Change one meaningful variable at a time, such as the opening image or headline, and give the campaign enough delivery to produce interpretable results.

On Amazon, the ad and the product detail page work as one conversion path.

Publishing is only half the job

On Instagram, watch reach, impressions, link clicks, click-through rate, and the action that matches your objective. A high click-through rate is not automatically good if the traffic is unqualified or the landing page disappoints.

On Amazon, start with impressions, clicks, spend, attributed sales, and advertising cost of sales or return on ad spend. For Sponsored Products, Amazon offers automatic, manual, and negative targeting. Its targeting guide explains that automatic campaigns can reveal shopping terms, while manual campaigns give you more control over keywords or products. That makes an automatic campaign useful for learning, not just for convenience.

Do not panic over a few early impressions, and do not call a winner from one lucky click. Make a review schedule, record the creative version and audience settings, and compare like with like. If Amazon traffic reaches a detail page but sales remain weak, inspect the listing, price, availability, reviews, and featured offer before redesigning the ad.

Five questions beginners usually ask

Can I use the same image on Instagram and Amazon?

You can reuse the underlying concept, but you should export platform-specific crops. A single file may technically upload in several places while still placing the subject or text badly in one of them.

Should I always design in 1:1 first?

Square is a useful starting point for many feed and commerce assets, but it is not always the best master. If the product is tall or the story depends on a person’s full body, build the composition so a 9:16 version remains natural too.

How much text should be on a digital ad?

Use only the words needed to explain the offer or benefit. Smaller placements punish dense copy, and Amazon’s custom-image guidance specifically restricts or discourages crowded creative and certain text elements depending on the ad type.

Do Amazon ads require custom images?

Not always. Sponsored Products can promote individual listings using product information already in Amazon’s ecosystem. Custom images are more relevant to responsive display, Brand Store, and certain Sponsored Brands experiences.

Why does my ad look fine in the editor but bad after publishing?

Editors show a controlled preview; live placements change with device, crop, interface overlays, and delivery format. Preview each placement, view the export on a phone, and keep critical content inside a generous safe area.

The rule worth remembering

Do not ask, “How do I make this one ad fit every platform?” Ask, “What must the viewer understand in this placement, and what is the next action?” Instagram needs a fast visual reason to stop. Amazon needs a clear reason to consider the product and confidence that the click will lead somewhere accurate.

Once that distinction is clear, sizing becomes less mysterious. You are not making six unrelated designs. You are translating one promise into the visual language of each buying environment.

How this guide was put together

This guide was checked against Meta’s Instagram Feed design requirements and Amazon Ads’ current beginner, targeting, and responsive eCommerce creative documentation on October 9, 2026. Platform specifications, placement names, and campaign interfaces can change, so confirm the relevant specification page immediately before launch. No performance guarantee is implied: results depend on the offer, audience, listing quality, budget, competition, and measurement setup.
