Adapting Philip Pullman's award-winning trilogy of the same name, which is considered a modern masterpiece of imaginative fiction, the first season follows Lyra, a seemingly ordinary but courageous young woman from another world. Together, they encounter extraordinary beings and unsafe secrets, with the fate of both the living - and the dead - in their hands.

I do have issues with the show's dim lighting and muted colors: I'm not sure if Tom Hooper, who has directed Oscar-nominated but visually tiresome fare like Les Miserables and The King's Speech, could do justice to the sumptuous settings of Pullman's fantasy world. Here, in the His Dark Materials trailer, we see how the HBO and BBC One series envisions such fantastical sights as the CG-enhanced daemons; the world of Gyptians, a lower-class nomadic group living on the fringes; and characters like the Panserbjørn, a species of highly intelligent armored polar bears.

His Dark Materials still doesn't have a premiere date, but network president Casey Bloys recently suggested that it would air on Monday nights in late 2019.
