To Prevent Dementia, Try Exercise, Not Vitamin Pills

Dementia affects around 50 million people around the world.

Dementia is caused by a variety of brain illnesses that affect memory, thinking, behavior and the ability to perform everyday activities.

In recommendations to counter an expected tripling in the number of people with the degenerative condition in the next 30 years, the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines are created to help medical professionals and governments to develop national policies. There's moderate evidence, the World Health Organization says, that it can help reduce the risk of cognitive decline in people with normal cognition; it can also potentially help slow decline in people already experiencing dementia.

New guidelines have been issued to improve lifestyle choices linked to the condition by the organisation, which said that age is the strongest risk factor for dementia but the disease is not an inevitable outcome of growing older.

The organisation estimated that the cost of caring for people with dementia would rise to two trillion dollars annually by 2030, if adequate measures were not taken by countries to address the problem.

Dementia is a broad category of diseases that reduce brain function beyond what might be expected from normal ageing.

We need to do everything we can to reduce our risk of dementia.

At a news conference, authorities said the pilot had just taken off from the helipad after refueling when something went wrong. As you can see below, onlookers also caught the crash on video so people have been freaking out on Twitter about it.

The agency said its new recommendations could provide the key to delaying or slowing cognitive decline or dementia. Studies have shown a relationship between the development of dementia with lifestyle related risk factors, certain medical conditions, and other risk factors such as social isolation and cognitive inactivity.

"While some people are unlucky and inherit a combination of genes that makes it highly likely they will develop dementia, many people have the opportunity to substantially reduce their risk by living a healthy lifestyle", Tara Spires-Jones, a professor at the University of Edinburgh and program leader at the UK Dementia Research Institute, told the Science Media Center Tuesday.

The recommendations call for people to exercise regularly and eat healthy, as well as maintain healthy blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol numbers. Carrillo agrees that people should be looking to obtain nutrients through eating whole foods rather than using supplements.

Currently, iSupport is available for use in eight countries, with more expected to follow in the future.

Tens of thousands of people in Ireland are now living with dementia.

The WHO also advocates proper management of a range of health indicators as ages grow, such as that of mid-life overweight and obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, depression, and hearing loss.
