Now, don't get me wrong, those kinds of movies have their place, but in order for Lionsgate to compete with Universal's Conjuring universe and New Line's It franchise and the Blumhouse brand, it has no choice but to reinvent the horror franchise, and Rock makes for an intriguing new ingredient in the Saw stew. Rock is a big fan of the franchise, and he's ready to bring it back to life.

In a statement, Rock said "I've been a fan of Saw since the first film in 2004". The film will be executive produced by Chris Rock, long-time Saw executive producer Daniel Heffner and the original creators of Saw, James Wan and Leigh Whannell. "'Saw" is one of the highest-grossing horror franchises of all time and it's one of Lionsgate's most successful film series.

The franchise lay dormant after that, but was revived in 2017 with Jigsaw. The sub-genre that was made famous through the Saw and Hostel franchises, although the overall horror world seems to be going in a different direction recently. Now, Rock is getting in on that action.
