Trump bans use of telecom firms that pose national security risk

"Having said that, of course, what matters for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is that these decisions are made in a way that makes sure that they have secure networks", Mr Stoltenberg said.

The emergency order gives the Secretary of Commerce the authority to block any transactions that would pose "undue risk of sabotage to or subversion" of IT or communications technologies and services, or "undue risk of catastrophic effects on the security or resiliency of. critical infrastructure or the digital economy".

The ban will not name any specific companies, but will direct the U.S. Department of Commerce to draft enforcement rules for it.

If signed, the executive order would come at a delicate time in relations between China and the United States as the world's two largest economies ratchet up tariffs in a battle over what US officials call China's unfair trade practices.

The U.S. has been trying without success to persuade other governments to exclude equipment made by Huawei from super-fast 5G mobile networks that will connect billions of devices. This has always been denied by Huawei. Soon, the same might be true for US companies.

"American companies must step up their efforts, or get left behind".

The Trump administration stepped up its criticism of Chinese technology theft and security threats this week, possibly laying the groundwork for the coming executive order.

The U.S. says Chinese law compels Huawei to cooperate with Beijing's espionage agencies.

It comes amid increasing scrutiny of Chinese telecom firms.

"This is a single-party government".

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai, who has called Huawei a threat to US security, said Wednesday that "given the threats presented by certain foreign companies' equipment and services, this is a significant step toward securing America's networks".

Many U.S. allies are under pressure to not use Huawei equipment because of spying allegations. Huawei has already signed 5G contracts with 25 countries in Europe, 10 in the Middle East, and 6 in Asia, and the company is hopeful that by signing a no-spy agreement it will see even more 5G contracts in the future.

Huawei representatives argue that the type of security audits that should be routinely performed on crucial technology from any vendor could mitigate any hypothetical risk their equipment poses.

Speaking about espionage concerns, Liang said Huawei was willing to sign a "no-spy agreement" with governments, including the United Kingdom.
