Pixel phone owners: Google may owe you $500

In February 2018, Pixel owners launched a lawsuit against Google for continuing to sell the phones despite knowing about their faults, and after it promised to take "additional steps to reinforce the connection".

Google and Huawei have previously settled a class action lawsuit over bootloop issues on Google's Nexus 6P, while LG has settled a lawsuit over bootloop issues on several Android phones, including Google's Nexus 5X. Google set aside $7.25 million for the settlement fund - if that's not enough, the money will be distributed on a pro-rata basis. Worse still is the fact Google was at one point sending out replacement handsets that still carried the same fault.

Owners of the affected devices could be looking at a payout of up to $500. In order to qualify, you need to have been a US Pixel or Pixel XL owner with a handset manufactured before January 4, 2017. They must also be able to provide proof of purchase or must have been contacted directly by the Settlement Administration about the lawsuit.

What just happened? Were you an owner of one of the original Pixel phones?

Trump bans use of telecom firms that pose national security risk
Soon, the same might be true for US companies. "American companies must step up their efforts, or get left behind". It comes amid increasing scrutiny of Chinese telecom firms. "This is a single-party government".

The original complaint said hundreds of customers complained to Google of "severe microphone issues".

Anyone who had to pay an insurance deductible could be refunded the amount. If you did, the settlement will ensure you get the entire payment back in addition to any entitlement for your faulty Pixel phone. These claimants could be paid up to $500 in the settlement.

The court still needs to approve the settlement, but a hearing scheduled for June 5 to decide whether or not to grant preliminary approval.
