PG&E equipment sparked deadly California wildfire

The wind-driven blaze, dubbed the Camp Fire, erupted in the drought-parched Sierra foothills 175 miles (280 km) north of San Francisco in November 2018 and raced with little warning through the town of Paradise, incinerating much of that community.

Cal Fire announced the results of their investigation on Wednesday, six months after the wildfire that almost wiped out the town of Paradise.

Assemblyman Jim Wood, who represents the Santa Rosa and Mendocino County areas, told Johnson that he had helped identify victims in the 2010 San Bruno PG&E pipeline explosion that killed eight people.

Half a year after the Camp Fire killed 85 people and razed more than 150,000 acres in Northern California, investigators have determined that it was sparked by PG&E-controlled electrical transmission lines in the community of Pulga.

California fire officials said Wednesday that Pacific Gas & Electric Corp. power lines sparked a Northern California blaze that killed 85 people, making it the deadliest US wildfire in a century.

An investigation into the cause of the fire began nearly immediately, with suspicion soon falling on power equipment operated by Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). This fire was consumed by the original fire which started earlier near Pulga.

PG&E works on power lines to fix damage caused by the Camp Fire in Paradise, California, U.S. November 21, 2018.

"The tinder dry vegetation and Red Flag conditions consisting of strong winds, low humidity and warm temperatures promoted this fire and caused extreme rates of spread", the report concluded.

CAL FIRE investigators were immediately dispatched to the Camp Fire and began working to determine the origin and cause of the fire. The Camp Fire is the deadliest and most destructive fire in California history.

PG&E's bankruptcy reorganization plan is due by the end of May, but it has requested an extension until November.
