Farmer amputates leg with knife to escape auger

Nebraska farmer Kurt Kaser was moving grain into a bin last month when his foot slipped into a piece of farm equipment, a grain auger that has a large rotating screw blade in it.

"I thought 'how long am I going to stay conscious here?' because I didn't know what to expect", he told KETV. "I did what I thought I had to do, and it worked".

Kurtis Kaser, 63, knew he had to act quick as his leg was getting pulled into the machine. Growing desperate by the seconds, the farmer said he was left with one option.

"These accidents happen all the time, when I was a sixth grader my other leg got stuck in a tractor, only my skin suffered that time", he said. "They're going to grab me and pull me in further, '" he said.

The entire ordeal lasted about five minutes, but Kaser sounded sanguine about it and the loss of the bottom half of his leg.

When asked how he has been able to remain positive about the situation, Kaser joked that it's because of his headstrong ways. I don't want to give up'.

Felicity Huffman pleads guilty in college admissions scandal
Singer pleaded guilty in March to racketeering, money laundering; conspiracy to defraud the U.S. , and obstruction of justice. In court, she wore a gray dress and a sweater and sat flanked by her attorneys while her brother watched from the front row.

After he was freed, he crawled 45 metres to the nearest phone and was flown to a hospital.

He was taken to the hospital and then later airlifted to another hospital.

Following a stint at a local rehabilitation centre, Mr Kaser was released on Friday and will receive a prosthetic leg after his leg fully recovers. His occupational therapist, Dani Willey, said Kaser - who admitted that he "paid the price" for not paying attention - now has his sights set on returning to his farm.

"Adrenaline kicked in so much that I don't know if it hurt or not", he said.

The incident may remind some moviegoers of a scene in the 2010 film "127 Hours". The movie is based on the real story of adventurer Aron Ralston who in 2003 became trapped in a Utah canyon and freed himself by cutting off his own arm with a boring pocketknife.
