Felicity Huffman Pleads Guilty to College Admissions Fraud

Huffman pleaded guilty alongside another parent charged in the case, California businessman Devin Sloane, who prosecutors said paid Singer $250,000 to help his oldest son gain admission to USC as a purported water polo recruit.

Huffman was among 50 people charged in March in what authorities have called the largest college admissions cheating scandal ever prosecuted in the U.S. She has admitted her role in paying $15,000 to the man who orchestrated the massive scheme, Rick Singer, in order to fraudulently boost her daughter's SAT score as part of the nationwide college admissions scam.

The star had previously released a statement taking responsibility for her actions and admitting guilt while showing at least some level of remorse, so it's possible a judge may acknowledge that as appropriately remorseful and lighten her sentence, especially after her guilty plea today.

During the hearing on Monday, prosecutors said they would recommend four months in prison for Huffman.

Huffman agreed to plead guilty for "conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud" in April. She is accused of paying $15,000 to a fraudulent charity to take the SAT test on her daughter's behalf.

"My desire to help my daughter is no excuse to break the law or engage in dishonesty", she wrote in a statement.

Strategies included paying invigilators to fix answers, and allowing impostors to sit the exams.

CNN reports that prosecutors plan to seek a sentence of four to 10 months' jail time for the "Desperate Housewives" TV star, although the charges could carry a max penalty of 20 years in prison.

Investigators have said Huffman's husband, 69-year-old "Shameless" actor William H. Macy, was with her when Singer explained how he could arrange for the cheating because he "controlled" a test centre.

"My daughter knew absolutely nothing about my actions, and in my misguided and profoundly wrong way, I have betrayed her".

Actress Felicity Huffman was also scheduled to plead guilty Monday.

She also apologized to students who work hard to get into college.

Rosen noted that she discussed the scheme with Singer, including troubles getting her daughter's testing location and proctor changed after she was granted extra time on the exam.

Fellow actress Lori Loughlin and her fashion designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli, have pleaded not guilty to paying $500,000 in bribes to get their daughters into the University of Southern California as crew recruits even though neither of them is a rower. His charge is the same as Huffman's but prosecutors said he paid a lot more money for the scheme and recommended he serve 12 months in prison and pay a $75,000 fine.
