'Avengers: Endgame' Wins Third Weekend At Box Office Over 'Detective Pikachu'

Walt Disney Co.'s "Avengers: Endgame" held on to the top spot in North American theaters for a third-straight weekend, another milestone in its march to surpass 2009's "Avatar" as the highest-grossing movie in history.

Detective Pikachu has opened to an estimated $58 million at the U.S. box office, according to the folks at Box Office Mojo.

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios' grand conclusion to twenty-two films, "Avengers: Endgame". It's still the second-biggest film ever globally with $2.48 billion, pacing behind just "Avatar" with $2.78 billion.

"I'm giddy", Warner Bros.' head of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein, told Variety this morning.

Pokemon fans certainly aren't playing around as they catapulted Detective Pikachu to make $20.7 million on its opening day.

Less lucky was the Diane Keaton cheerleading comedy "Poms", which grossed only $5.1 million in its debut against similarly negative reviews from critics. Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway's The Hustle launched on the higher end of expectations with US$13.5 million from 3,007 screens.

Sony's psychological thriller The Intruder dropped two spots from last week to fourth place with a take of $6.6 million.

In smaller releases, "Tolkien", a biopic about the "Lord of the Rings" author starring Nicholas Hoult opened in ninth place on 1,495 screens with $2.2 million, while the documentary "The Biggest Little Farm" debuted in five locations and earned $101,012. Overall, the industry-wide box office continues to get stronger as the year goes on.
