Measles quarantine orders at 2 LA universities

More than 300 students and faculty members at two Los Angeles universities have been placed under a quarantine order, after they were exposed to measles and were not able to verify they had been vaccinated or have immunity.

A student enters Franz Hall at University of California, Los Angeles, on Thursday in the Westwood section of Los Angeles. "As a result, LACDPH has chose to quarantine those individuals until their immunity is determined".

Since then, officials have released more than 40 people from the quarantine after establishing they had immunity. Some people may need to be quarantined for up to a week. The UCLA quarantine will end by Tuesday, according to the Department of Public Health.

Seventy-one students and 127 staff members are quarantined at CSULA after a possible measles exposure at a campus library, school officials told KTLA.

As a result, health officials requested that "Cal State LA employees" who may have been exposed "to provide immunization records or be checked for immunity" and refrain from going to work. There were 11 cases total this time a year ago.

The virus can lead to deadly complications, but no measles deaths have been reported in the latest U.S. outbreak. "Please be assured that we have the resources we need for prevention and treatment, and that we are working very closely with local public health officials on the matter".

Hundreds of students and faculty at two universities in Los Angeles have been asked to stay home unless they can prove that they've been vaccinated against measles.

At UCLA, one "student diagnosed with measles possibly exposed 500 people to measles", the LA Times adds.

But the double-dose vaccine is highly effective and lasts a lifetime for those who have been immunized. Those who have had measles are immune.

Statewide, the number of measles cases has increased so far in 2019 with much of the rise attributed to overseas travel.
