Georgia company recalls 113,000 pounds of beef nationwide amid E. coli outbreak

Cases of E. coli have been reported in Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia and Florida, according to the CDC. "The only way to0 confirm that raw ground beef is cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria is to use a food thermometer that measures internal temperature". However, officials say they're still testing to see whether the recalled beef is related to the outbreak.

To avoid the contagion, the CDC advises people to wash their hands, cook meats thoroughly, avoid cross-contamination of food preparation areas, wash fruits and vegetables, avoid unpasteurized dairy products and juices and don't prepare food for others when you are sick.

The beef from K2D Foods, working under the name Colorado Premium Foods, was headed to distributors in Florida (Fort Orange) and Georgia (Norcross) who would sell the beef to restaurants, according to the USDA recall notice.

Unopened, intact ground beef that was collected as part of the investigation from an undisclosed restaurant location, where multiple patients sickened in the outbreak said they ate meals, tested positive for E. coli O103.

Of the people infected so far, 20 of them have been hospitalized, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday.

Federal health officials say more than 150 people have been infected and it's linked to tainted ground beef served in homes and restaurants. The latter three states account for 139 of the 156 cases so far in this outbreak.

The USDA said it's anxious that some product may be in restaurant refrigerators or freezers, and it urged the establishments to not serve them, throw the products away, or to return them to the place of purchase. Most recover within a week, but it can lead to kidney failure.

Symptoms of E. coli infection include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. The agency is not recommending that consumers avoid eating ground beef at this time.
