Trump and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey meet and talk social media

The San Francisco-based company reported $787 million in revenue, an 18 per cent increase from the year-earlier period.

Twitter shares rallied some six percent in pre-market trade on the stronger-than-expected results. That number has been decreasing year over year for several quarters, and Twitter told investors in 2018 that the metric would likely continue to drop for some time as it removes spam and suspicious accounts.

The company said it expects second-quarter revenue to be $770 million to $830 million - a wide forecast range with a midpoint of $800 million, lower than analysts' average sales estimate of US$819.2 million.

Twitter also sees more operating costs as it cleans up its platform to minimize abusive user behavior.

"People love this", said CEO Jack Dorsey, on an earnings call.

"We are reducing the burden on victims and, where possible, taking action before abuse is reported". "Improvements in Q1 emphasized proactive detection of rule violations and physical, or off-platform, safety - including making it easier to report Tweets that share personal information, helping us remove 2.5 times more of this content since launch".

The clean-up campaign, which comes amid global pressure on social media sites to crackdown on harmful content, was reflected in rising costs for the company, which posted an 18 per cent increase in expenses to $693m. Excluding a tax benefit of $124m, adjusted net income was $66m, up from $61m a year ago.

Monthly active users were 330 million in the first quarter, Twitter said.
