Elizabeth Warren Announces 'Free College' Plan on Lenin's Birthday

After making headlines by calling for impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, Warren laid out in a Medium post her plan to cancel $50,000 in student loan debt for everyone who makes under $100,000 per year.

She said that wiping out student debt and making two- and four-year public colleges free would boost the economy and help close the wealth gap between minorities and whites. When Warren was asked how she would avoid the fate of Hillary Clinton in 2016, which the questioner said was partly due to sexism, Warren talked about the deep skepticism she faced when she chose to run for Senate in 2012. Debt forgiveness alone would involve a one-time cost of $640 billion. She would pay for all this with her proposed "Ultra-Millionaire Tax" on the 75,000 American families who possess at least $50 million in wealth.

Warren's plan is a bailout for students who made poor financial decisions. Last month, Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kamala Harris of California, Kirsten Gillibrand of NY and Elizabeth Warren of MA - all presidential contenders - signed on to co-sponsor Sen.

As the list of candidates for 2020 continues to grow - here are the people who have already announced their candidacy. She's also proposing free 2- or 4-year public college program for Americans to make "higher education of all kinds more inclusive and available to every single American, especially lower-income, Black, and Latinx students", her campaign noted.

Sanders introduced the College for All Act in 2017, which called for student loan refinancing, "but", Politico notes, "Warren's proposal on existing student loan debt goes beyond that of Sanders".

I think she wants to wipe out the economy for 350 million Americans.

"Some people will say we can't afford this plan".

I am not without sympathy for those who have racked up tens of thousands in burdensome college debt, and, in the process, helped fund the installation of those august tools of higher learning, campus water parks. "It's forcing students to drop out of school before getting a degree". Goldrick-Rab, who has written about hunger and homelessness on college campuses, said a better solution could include expanding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

NBA Playoffs: Position-By-Position Breakdown Of Milwaukee Bucks-Boston Celtics
The Bucks entered the postseason as the top seed in the East while the Celtics entered the playoffs as the fourth-seed in the Eastern Conference.

Mary Clare Amselem, a policy analyst with The Heritage Foundation, argues, "free college proposals will simply hasten the deterioration of quality education".

The proposal would also require public colleges to complete an annual report identifying obstacles to enrollment and graduation for lower income students and students of color.

On Monday night, at one of five consecutive hour-long CNN candidate town halls, Warren was asked if she was concerned about being "Hillary'd" during the campaign - an apparent shorthand for facing sexism during the race. Warren won her Senate election in 2012, and she credited that to staying on her message of progressive policies.

This week Warren joined California Sen. Warren, Harris and Sen.

"What I worry about is that works to Trump's advantage", he said. Go to college, get a degree in something worthless, become indoctrinated in socialist dogma, become a victim - and then have someone else pay for it.

"For two cents on the dollar, we could pay for universal child care, universal pre-K, universal college and knock back the student loan debt burden for about 43 million Americans and still have almost, just short, of $1 trillion leftover", Warren said.

"While I do think that any type of broad-based loan forgiveness program would certainly benefit students depending on the details - and I have lots of questions on what those details are. but the root of that issue is really because middle class families aren't growing", Ferreira said.
