Microsoft to Answer Apple's AirPods With Surface Buds Wireless Earbuds

Apple's lineup of AirPods wireless earbuds has been immensely successful, and the rest of the tech industry is still trying to catch up.

The device is being developed as part of a secret project, codenamed 'Morrison, ' and could be coming as soon as later this year. It's still not clear yet what special technology Microsoft could bring to the table, except the Cortana integration we've already seen in the Surface headphones. However, most people prefer the convenience of earbuds or in-ear headphones, so it really makes sense for Microsoft's Surface team to explore these other form factors. "Thurrott does say that the buds could contain a feature that "[improves] interactions between a phone and the earbuds" to make reading websites, e-books, and other digital content easier on smartphones, but that functionality may not make it into the final product.

Apparently, Microsoft wants to cover the two "major categories" of headphones: over-ear and in-ear.

The earbuds, which are now in development, are code-named Morrison but could be called "Surface Buds" when they launch for consumers. To recall, Microsoft in October previous year unveiled its over-ear Surface Headphones with 40mm drivers.
