Donald Trump investigations and gun safety coverage dominate 2019 Pulitzer Prizes

The 2019 Pulitzer Prizes, rewarding journalism and cultural excellence, were handed out on Monday, with a special emphasis going to investigations involving Donald Trump and reporting on gun safety issues in the aftermath of mass shootings.

A posthumous citation was made to Aretha Franklin "for her indelible contribution to American music and culture for more than five decades".

Novelist Richard Powers won the Pulitzer for fiction for "The Overstory", a panoramic look at nine Americans whose lives become entwined due to their experiences with trees, and David W. Blight picked up the prize in history for his acclaimed biography "Frederick Douglas". The Capital Gazette will receive an $100,000 award.

Franklin, who died last summer, is the first woman singled out for an honorary Pulitzer, which has been given to Bob Dylan and John Coltrane, among others.

The Pulitzer Price for global reporting went to Maggie Michael, Maad al-Zikry, and Nariman El-Mofty of the Associated Press for their coverage of the war in Yemen, and to Reuters journalists for stunning reports on the expulsion and murder of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

As a result of the work by reporter Maggie Michael, photographer Nariman El-Mofty and video journalist Maad al-Zikry, at least 80 prisoners were released from secret detention sites, and the United Nations rushed food and medicine to areas where the AP revealed that people were starving while corrupt officials diverted global food aid. The New York Times was awarded a Pulitzer in explanatory reporting for its investigation of the Trump family wealth and tax arrangements created to skirt inheritance tax laws. The team won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in global reporting for their work documenting torture, graft and starvation in Yemen's brutal civil war.

U.S. measles cases surge again as outbreak nears record
Six of the additional 44 cases are newly diagnosed, while the other 38 are recently discovered, the NY health department said. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization , wrote in an opinion piece Monday on CNN.

In a series of stories, they told of how people in parts of Yemen were reduced to eating leaves while corrupt officials diverted worldwide food aid. Their supporters say the two were framed in retaliation for their reporting.

To that end, Jackie Sibblies Drury's "Fairview", a piercing look at race and class in America, won the Pulitzer Prize for drama, beating out Clare Barron's "Dance Nation and Heidi Schreck's "What the Constitution Means to Me". Sibblies Drury is New York City-based playwright whose plays include "Really, "Social Creatures" and "We Are Proud to Present a Presentation".

Reid's opera, "prism", premiered in November as part of Los Angeles Opera's Off Grand series for experimental works. "Melodies are endless and inventively transformed, the atmospheric pressure ever changing". "She's continued to receive multiple awards - she's received nearly every award imaginable and now to get the Pulitzer Prize, it's just incredible", Sabrina Owens, Franklin's niece and the executor of her estate, said in an interview with The Associated Press on Monday.

The contest was established by newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer.

It received the public service award for "exposing failings by school and law enforcement officials before and after the deadly shooting rampage".
