Sudan protesters block attempt to break up sit

Last Thursday Sudan's army announced it had removed and detained Bashir after three decades in power and was setting up a transitional military council to run the country.

But demonstrators have pledged to remain on the streets until the military hands power to a civilian administration.

Siddiq also called for the "immediate reform" of Sudan's National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS). The former president's brother, Abdallah Bashir, in turn, has been on a business trip to South Sudan since 6 April.

The Sudanese Professionals Association, which is behind the protests, urged people to head to the sit-in Monday and defend it from any new attempts by the military to disperse the demonstrators.

"We appeal to all to move immediately to the protest camp to protect the revolution and its gains", it said in a statement.

Footage circulating online shows hundreds of troops outside the military headquarters in Khartoum on Monday.

The umbrella organisation, which spearheaded the months of protests that precipitated al-Bashir's removal, also demanded the sacking of Sudan's prosecutor general and judiciary head, as well as the disbanding of the former president's National Congress Party (NCP). In some videos the protesters chant "Revolution", as well as slogans against al-Bashir's Islamist supporters.

"If our demand for the formation of a civilian transitional council with military representation is not met, we will not be part of the executive authority, the cabinet, and we will continue the mass escalation and the sit-ins to fulfill our demands", Rabie told Reuters.

The statement said Gen. Hashem Babakr was appointed the joint chief of staff, replacing Gen. Kamal Abdel-Marouf al-Mahi, who was ousted along with Defense Minister Awad ibn Ouf a day after al-Bashir's overthrow.

Since his ouster, al-Bashir - president for almost 30 years - has been under house arrest in Khartoum.

The British ambassador said he had "expressed concerns" about the "historic role of the RSF", saying that allegations of crimes and abuses needed to be addressed by the military council in order to build confidence in it among citizens.

Talks between protest leaders and Sudan's new rulers were followed on Sunday by a meeting between Washington's top envoy to Khartoum, Steven Koutsis, and the military council's deputy. The announcement was unlikely to satisfy the protesters.

"It is time for the Transitional Military Council and all other parties to enter into an inclusive dialogue to effect a transition to civilian rule", the statement read.

Sudan's uprising began in December as a series of protests against the rising costs of fuel and food, but soon shifted to calls for al-Bashir to step down.

The protests against al-Bashir gained further momentum after Algeria's President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, in power for 20 years, resigned earlier this month in response to weeks of similar protests.
