Fisher-Price recalls Rock 'n Play Sleeper after 32 deaths

Two days after the American Academy of Pediatrics urged the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to recall Fisher-Price Rock 'n Play Sleepers, the CPSC announced the recall of all 4.7 million of the units on Friday.

On its website, the commission said at least 30 infants had died in the sleeper model since its 2009 release.

"For nearly 90 years, Fisher-Price has made the safety of children our highest priority". These deaths happened after the babies rolled from their back to their stomach or side, while unrestrained. "The Rock 'n Play inclined sleeper should be removed from the market immediately".

Consumers are advised to stop using the sleepers immediately and contact Fisher-Price for a refund or voucher.

NEW YORK (AP) - Fisher-Price recalled almost 5 million infant sleepers on Friday after more than 30 babies died in them over a 10-year period.

"Fisher-Price and every one of our employees take the responsibility of being part of your family seriously, and we are committed to earning that trust every day", it said. The CPSC's warning asked parents not to allow children over 3 months use the sleeper. "By not fully compensating consumers, Fisher-Price is assuring that many consumers will instead choose to keep the product", said Nancy Cowles, executive director of Kids in Danger, a nonprofit that focuses on reducing childhood injuries from consumer products.

Patty Davis, a spokeswoman with CPSC, had said the commission was aware of the report of additional fatalities and were looking into those deaths. The sleepers, a soft cradle that vibrates, are used to put babies to sleep.

ATTENTION PARENTS: Fisher-Price has issued a warning after reports of death when infants roll over while using their Rock 'N Play.

The AAP, meanwhile, said it doesn't recommend children using "inclined sleep products like the Rock 'n Play, or any other products for sleep that require restraining a baby".

Some studies have suggested that babies that sleeping on their backs have a lower chance of dying from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Earlier this week, following the article from Consumer Reports, Fisher-Price said its Rock 'n Play Sleeper "meets all applicable safety standards".
