IN teachers hit with pellets during shooter training

Several teachers at an Indiana elementary school were injured after they were told to kneel and then shot with plastic pellets "execution style" during an active-shooter drill, according to the Indiana State Teachers Association.

Other teachers allegedly listened to their colleagues' screams while they waited for their turn to be brought into the room in groups.

"They told us, 'This is what happens if you just cower and do nothing, '" one teacher told IndyStar, which did not name the teachers.

The exercises were part of the ALICE training model, which coaches teachers and students to proactively respond to threats, as opposed to a traditional lockdown strategy. "Teachers waiting outside that heard the screaming were brought into the room four at a time and the shooting process was repeated", the association tweeted. While seemingly refusing to confirm that teachers were shot at all, he also said the teachers "all knew they could be" because "it's a shooting exercise".

County Sheriff Bill Brooks' office oversaw the training, though he couldn't go into specifics because he only took office that month and said he was not there when the airsoft guns were used.

They explained that the teachers who were shot with "some sort of projectiles" ended up with welts, and that blood was drawn.

The state teachers union said that the point-blank shots during the drill left very real injuries.

"Educators should never have to endure being fired at with pellets in an active shooter training", ISTA Vice President Keith Gambill said in a statement. Teachers who participated in the drill complained of welts and bleeding from the airsoft gun pellets.

The incident comes as school districts across the country are considering ways to prepare for scenarios involving gunmen in the wake of two major school shootings a year ago that shook students, educators and parents and propelled the country to re-examine everything from gun safety laws to school discipline practices.

ISTA director of government relations Gail Zeheralis told lawmakers that the union wanted a statement promising that teachers wouldn't be shot with projectiles in future drills.
