MySpace Loses 12 Years Of Uploaded Music Due To A Server Issue

A spokesperson for MySpace says that pretty much anything on the site that is more than three years old - which surely has to be 99 per cent of its content - is at risk of having been binned during a recent server switcheroo operation.

On its site, Myspace still describes itself as "the world's largest digital music library", with "53 million tracks and videos", though the claim is likely no longer accurate.

The issue surfaced in a Reddit discussion early previous year as MySpace users realized they could not longer stream songs stored on the social networking site.

In addition to artists who later made it big, Myspace was also home to many acts who may have only ever uploaded their music to Myspace.

MySpace has come under fire after they admitted to losing over 12 years of music uploaded to the site between 2003 and 2015.

'We apologise for the inconvenience'.

"Until this is resolved the option to download is not available".

As Brooklyn Vegan points out, Myspace (which now uses a lowercase "s", for shame) has confirmed it is no longer hosting more than 50 million songs uploaded between 2003 and 2015.

It has nevertheless been in decline for years, failing to compete with other leading social media and music-sharing platforms including Facebook and YouTube, despite multiple redesigns of the site. "If you would like more information, please contact our Data Protection Officer".

Former Kickstarter CTO Andy Baio voiced skepticism regarding the data loss, arguing it's likely Myspace deleted older files intentionally, rather than accidentally. Customers were first told MySpace would correct the issue and later told the files were corrupted and couldn't be transferred to the new site. Instead, it sold MySpace for $35 million in 2011.
