Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi handed first England call-up

The news, confirmed on Monday, came shortly after James Ward-Prowse was drafted in to provide cover in midfield.

Luke Shaw has joined John Stones, Fabian Delph and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in withdrawing from the squad.

"It's been a insane day but getting my first [senior] worldwide call-up is an unbelievable feeling", Hudson-Odoi said.

Skipper Harry Kane is the first name on the teamsheet, while Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford are two key ingredients, but given Jamie Vardy's recent worldwide retirement Southgate will no doubt be eager to strengthen his attacking options, with the exciting Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho and Bournemouth's Callum Wilson also included in the latest squad.

Chelsea officials visited Hudson-Odoi in the dressing room after the match, and both parties decided not to comment publicly on the matter immediately after the match as they waited for UEFA's response.

Hudson-Odoi was a member of England's England Under-17 World Cup winning side in 2017 and has been capped from Under-16 through to Under-19 level. Hudson-Odoi scored two goals in seven appearances for the victorious Under-17s at the 2017 tournament in India, and joins his teammate at that event, Jadon Sancho, in graduating into Southgate's squad.

The Blues rejected several offers from Bayern Munich for the young winger during the January transfer window.

Hudson-Odoi started the tie at the Olympic Stadium, scoring the visitors' fifth goal - his fourth goal in the competition this season - only to be on the receiving end of monkey chants close to the final whistle in Chelsea's emphatic victory.

"I thought the manager [Under-21 manager Aidy Boothroyd] was joking".

As the players left the pitch, Hudson-Odoi then told Chelsea officials what he had heard, prompting chairman Bruce Buck and club secretary David Barnard to approach the UEFA match delegate to make him aware of what had occurred.
