NASA Opportunity rover’s last panorama shows its final resting place

NASA shared the Opportunity Rover's legacy as a stunning Panorama of Mars. The 360-degree photo is composed of 354 images overall, taken by the rover's Panoramic Camera (Pancam) from May 13th through June 10th.

"This final panorama embodies what made our Opportunity rover such a remarkable mission of exploration and discovery", stated John Callas, the project manager behind Opportunity. This latest panorama is like a greatest hits of the Red Planet, containing Mars' signature reddish rocks, the rim of Endeavour Crater, pieces of Opportunity itself, and views of its tracks.

'It is because of trailblazing missions such as Opportunity that there will come a day when our courageous astronauts walk on the surface of Mars, ' NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said last month.

In February 2019, NASA declared Opportunity's mission over, 15 years after it began.

For almost 15 years, Opportunity, which landed on Mars in 2004 along with its twin rover Spirit, studied the Martian surface, returning knowledge about the planet's geology and environment that will prove useful to scientists long into the future and likely serve as a guide for upcoming missions.

The Opportunity rover spent almost 15 years rolling around Mars, collecting data for researchers on Earth. It shows the vehicle's final resting place in Perseverance Valley located in Endurance Crater's western rim.

Recently NASA has given up trying to contact the Mars Rover Opportunity, and contact with it was lost in the early summer of a year ago in connection with the beginning of a powerful dust storm.

You can view the finer details of the huge panorama at NASA's JPL website. "And to the far right and left are the bottom of Perseverance Valley and the floor of Endeavour crater, pristine and unexplored, waiting for visits from future explorers", Callas stated.

An annotated version of Opportunity's final panorama. However, NASA scientists are reminiscing about the wondrous discoveries made by the golf cart-sized robot by publishing a attractive panorama of Mars taken by Opportunity. But in the bottom left, you may notice a few frames are still in black and white. This is because Oppy did not have time to image those frames with color filters before the devastating dust storm struck.

These two thumbnails, with the faint sun near the middle of each, are the last images NASA's Opportunity rover took on Mars as a dust storm darkened the sky.

A dust storm blanketed its location in June past year. "Now she can rest, beneath a thin layer of dust, knowing she did humanity proud".
