Android Q Beta 1 officially announced

Android Q Beta 1 officially announced

If you thought the Pixel 3 and 3 XL were prematurely leaked and detailed previous year, you may want to keep in mind the first Pixel 3 Lite hands-on photos surfaced online back in November and we still have no idea exactly when Google might be planning to release this mid-ranger.

Keep in mind, Android Q is now in beta - the first beta at that! - so features will likely change or be removed altogether. The changes aren't massive here, but the best parts of our year are playing with new versions of Android. While this alleged Pixel 3 Lite XL prototype runs the latest stable OS version (Android 9.0 Pie), its processor and memory count are hardly up to modern standards. Maybe the Pixel 4 XL will inherit these, or maybe Google will upgrade them in a way.

Google is finally revamping the Share menu in Android Q and making it notably faster. Android Q will include improvements there, too, allowing apps to request a Dynamic Depth image that includes a JPEG, XMP metadata related to depth elements, and a depth and confidence map all in the same file. Also, flashing additional Android Q preview images will cause more data wipes, and if go this route, you will not get automatic OTA updates like you do with the Android Beta Program (as above). With Android Q, you will gain the option of letting an app access your location information only while you're actively using the app. It's available to all Pixel phones, including the original Pixel and Pixel XL.

Google hasn't said exactly when Android Q is going to get pushed out to the world at large, but it has said it's going to be sometime in the third quarter of 2019 - so either July, August or September. So, you have the system-wide dark mode, a redesigned permissions page.

So what shiny new features does Android Q bring along with it?

This is a small but important feature because you no longer have to dig into the Settings app to figure out how to tailor an app's alerts.

Android Q also gives you more control over apps and what they can access. For example, if you're using a browser but you've got no internet connection, a setting panel can pop up and display the Internet Connectivity panel so that you can quickly toggle on Wi-Fi or mobile data without leaving your app.

"But since the app may not need location outside of when it's now in use, the user may not want to grant that access".
