Six Nations unions face ethical dilemma over £5bn global league

World Rugby was widely criticised by players' unions over the idea of a 12-team league, which was reportedly initially considered.

World Rugby's plan is to amalgamate the fragmented global rugby calendar around a single annual competition that would have the Six Nations regularly play those involved in the southern hemisphere's "Rugby Championship"- New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Argentina.

"The players have made their views clear on the proposed global competition but at the same time, they want to work with World Rugby, unions, provinces and clubs to genuinely explore what may be possible".

It is believed that both Ireland and Scotland oppose the Nations League concept primarily because they do not agree with there being relegation and promotion for the Six Nations.

"Within the original proposal, players would play a maximum of 13 matches if their team reaches the final, compared to an average of between 12 and 14 test matches presently". "The professional leagues now seem to be excluded from this new work, even though the World Rugby project would be a major change to the San Francisco agreement for all elements of the professional game and impact other competitions", the statement read.

World Rugby's plans came in for heavy criticism last week after several high-profile players aired concerns about the strain additional Test matches and travel could place on player welfare.

PRL and LNR added the world governing body had broken an agreement which was reached in January 2017 about future plans for the worldwide game running until 2032. Which would incorporate the existing Six Nations and an expanded Rugby Championship into two group stages, ahead of semi-final and final matches to be played as part of an extended autumn Test series.

"However, as you would expect in an ambitious, complex and multi-stakeholder project, not everyone is in full agreement on the way forward, including the matter of promotion and relegation, but we will continue to engage and consult".
