Ms Loughlin is accused of paying the mastermind of the scheme, William "Rick" Singer, $US500,000 to help both of her daughters cheat their way into USC by bribing an athletics official at the school to pretend the girls were gifted rowers.

The conspiracy allegedly included bribing entrance exam administrators to allow test takers to take exams in the place of students or to correct students' answers, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of MA.

In particular, the coaches worked at such schools as Yale, Stanford, Georgetown, Wake Forest, the University of Texas, the University of Southern California and the University of California at Los Angeles, faking profiles of the applicants, regardless of their actual abilities in sports.

Those involved could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

In many cases, the students were not aware that their parents had arranged for the cheating, prosecutors said, although in other cases they knowingly took part.

"This case is about the widening corruption of elite college admissions through the steady application of wealth combined with fraud", Lelling said Tuesday. None of the children were charged on Tuesday.
