Google reportedly shifting employees away from tablet, laptop division

The main target of Google's hardware reorganisation appears to be centred around the company's laptop and tablet group, with BI's source claiming that despite Google already having a "bunch of stuff in the works", multiple products may get delayed or cancelled due to "roadmap cutbacks" as part of the company's plans to "pare down the portfolio". The move is expected to affect dozens of employees, ranging from hardware engineers to program managers.

For now, Google is asking affected employees to seek temporary roles, meaning that the company could revert the alleged downsizing down the line.

Google's Pixel Slate, launched late past year at the company's Made By Google event in NY, is yet to launch in many markets and makes an intriguing case for itself running Chrome OS but also being able to run Android apps.

However, with Google allegedly abstaining from outright laying off employees or eliminating their positions, Google seems to be erring on the side of caution while still giving itself the chance to re-up its investment in hardware at a later date. The company denied Business Insider's request for comment. Since the market is insanely competitive and margins are low, it seems Google decided that perhaps it would be best to concentrate its efforts on its products that are doing well for now.

Today, the Create division is responsible for the Pixelbook laptop and Pixel Slate tablet amongst the company's wider swath of "Made by Google" products.

Back in May 2016, Google first announced that it would be releasing updates to Chrome OS that would allow Android apps on Chromebook.

If anything, this is Google finally recognizing that ultra-luxury devices are not an ideal container for its Chrome OS, not to mention that its OS needs more work before it's readily available for use on both touch devices and traditional computers.

Manufacturing jobs have reportedly not been affected which implies that Google is only reassessing its plans for future products and the near-term devices will be launched as per plans.
