The Web Is 30. Here's What Its Inventor Thinks

The World Wide Web was invented 30 years ago, and we're grateful every day that it was.

But while boss Mike Sendall's response was somewhat lukewarm, he saw enough in Berners-Lee's vision to allocate his protege time to work on the project.

"It is understandable that many people feel afraid and unsure if the web is really a force for good", said Berners-Lee.

In the years that followed, Berners-Lee wrote the first HTML language, the HTTP application, and the first web browser.

The first, he said, resulted from issues like state-sponsored hacking and criminal behavior; the second from entities like ad-based revenue models "that commercially reward clickbait and the viral spread of misinformation"; and the last produced problems such as "the outraged and polarized tone and quality of online discourse".

Berners-Lee, the English software engineer who submitted his proposal for what would evolve into the World Wide Web 30 years ago Tuesday, said in a letter that his invention no longer serves its true objective to promote the free exchange of information around the globe.

Personal data essentially has become a form of currency that internet users turn over-sometimes unintentionally-to major tech corporations such as Amazon, Facebook, and Google in exchange for using their services.

Berners-Lee will be speaking live on YouTube today, talking more about how he sees the web.

"They put four people that know nothing about football in charge of looking at the replay for VAR". In the heat of the moment, it's quickly typed into a smart phone".

Some tough regulation may be necessary in some places, in others not, Berners-Lee said.

This year's challenge is to create an impactful video around the question, "If you could have one special power that would make life online better, what would it be?".

The web has become a public square, a library, a doctor's office, a shop, a school, a design studio, an office, a cinema, a bank, and so much more.

The contract, which is not "written in stone", must help guide people on the journey from "digital adolescence to a more mature, responsible and inclusive future", the web inventor said. His foundation is working with web companies and governments on a Contract for the Web, which will "establish clear norms, laws and standards that underpin the web".

"If we don't elect politicians who defend a free and open web, if we don't do our part to foster constructive healthy conversations online", said Sir Tim.

Berners-Lee is now working with the Web Foundation on a "Contract For The Web" which, if adopted, would protect "governments, companies and citizens" from the dark side of the connected world.

"The dream behind the Web is of a common information space in which we communicate by sharing information", he wrote.
