In budget, Trump to ask Congress for $8.6 billion for border wall

In Trump's annual budget request to Congress, he will request $5 billion in funding for the Department of Homeland Security to continue building sections of a wall along the Mexico border, said three people briefed on the request.

Despite active work on a bipartisan deal, the president declared a national emergency in February to secure the funding his administration felt was necessary to build barriers along the southern border. We have a crisis down there; I think the president has made that case very effectively.

"At a time when our country faces challenges about jobs for the future, this money would better be spent on rebuilding America, and on education and workforce development for jobs for the 21st Century", the statement continued.

A number of lawsuits have since been filed against the national emergency, and the Senate is set to pass a resolution that disapproves of the move.

The proposal comes on the heels of a bruising battle with Congress over wall funding that resulted in a five-week partial federal government shutdown that ended in January, and could touch off a sequel just ahead of a trifecta of ominous fiscal deadlines looming this fall.

The administration recently outlined roughly $8.1 billion in other immediate funding for the wall, which includes almost $1.4 billion in a recent spending bill, as well as $600 million from asset forfeitures, $2.5 billion from Defense Department counter-narcotics funds, and $3.6 billion from military construction money. The plan sticks to budget caps that both parties have routinely broken in recent years and promises to come into balance in 15 years, relying in part on economic growth that may be uncertain.

By signaling on Monday that he wants billions of dollars in additional border wall funding to be part of any deal, Trump is sending an early signal to lawmakers of what his demands will be. That standoff led to a 35-day partial government shutdown, the longest in US history.

Both schools are also urging the airlines and hotels to accommodate the fans as best as possible. So Diaz's debut as coach of the Hurricanes will come a week earlier than first thought.

As the Washington Examiner reported, the proposed funds would be used to build or replace wall along 722 miles of border. 'I think it's essential'.

It was Democrats that emerged triumphant from that clash and their control of the House makes it highly unlikely the president will receive the money he is asking for in his 2020 budget. However, following major gridlock between Republican and Democratic lawmakers, Congress allocated only $1.375 billion to finance 55 miles of barrier in Texas.

His move has already been challenged in court with a coalition of 16 US states led by California suing Trump and top members of his administration in an attempt to block his emergency declaration.

The GOP-majority Senate will vote on the measure this week, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell conceded that there aren't enough votes to defeat it.

The 2020 budget proposal will undoubtedly keep border security a top issue as the presidential election gets underway.

Funding legislation needs to be passed before 1 October or the government could shut down again.
