Alleged Prison Cellphone Use by 'Pharma Bro' Investigated

Citing interviews with multiple unnamed sources, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that Shkreli uses a contraband mobile phone to control his latest project, Phoenixus, a Swiss drug company that operates out of Manhattan. Shkreli also could face disciplinary sanctions within the prison if he is found to have conducted business. "This allegation is now under investigation".

The investigation was first reported by the Journal.

In the United States' federal prison system, inmates are forbidden to have cell phones-even in a minimum security facility like the one Shkreli was sent to-and Shkreli could face either a fine or an additional year of prison time if convicted. Before the official release of Lil Wayne's Tha Carter V, the former pharmaceuticals executive said that he was also in possession of that project, finding it in a auto one day.

Benjamin Brafman, a lawyer for Shkreli, declined to comment. The report claims Pharma Bro Martin Shkreli is "at work on a big second act" from his top bunk in a 12-person prison cell in New Jersey.

Shkreli, born in Brooklyn to Albanian immigrant parents, became known as the "Pharma Bro" in September 2015 after founding Turing Pharmaceuticals, buying the anti-parasitic drug Daraprim and raising its price by 5,000 percent to $750 per pill.

The risk could be worth it for the 35-year-old because, if Phoenixus continues to grow under his stewardship, it could be worth $3.7 billion by the time he is set free in 2023. In December 2015, he was indicted on unrelated securities fraud charges.

Shkreli was sentenced a year ago after being found guilty of securities and wire fraud related to the use of Retrophin, another drug company he founded, to pay investors he had defrauded through two hedge funds he also ran. A jury in federal court in Brooklyn found him guilty in August 2017.

Martin Shkreli, the disgraced pharmaceutical exec who gained notoriety for inflating the price of a lifesaving anti-infection drug, is serving a seven-year prison sentence for defrauding investors.
