Japanese woman confirmed as world's oldest person

With an affinity for studying mathematics and a fierce competitive streak when it comes to the board game Othello, Kane Tanaka, a 116-year-old Japanese woman, was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest living person this week.

Tanaka was born on January 2, 1903, the year the Wright brothers flew the world's first powered airplane.

The last World's Oldest Person, Chiyo Miyako, was a 117-year-old Japanese woman who died last July.

The global authority on records officially recognised Kane Tanaka in a ceremony at the nursing home where she lives in Fukuoka, in Japan's south-west.

She married Hideo Tanaka in 1922, giving birth to four children and adopting a fifth.

Her family and the mayor were present to celebrate.

Dark matter matters: Scientists solve weighty matter of Milky Way mass
They measured the velocity of globular clusters - dense star clusters that orbit the spiral disc of the galaxy at great distances. And there's a huge portion of the Milky Way we can never see, since it's made up of dark matter, which doesn't emit light at all.

Her husband ran a business making and selling sticky rice, Udon noodles and a type of Japanese sweet called Zenzai.

Asked what has been the happiest event in her life, Tanaka told reporters, "It's now".

Japanese people tend to exhibit longevity and dominate supercentenarian lists, and make up five out of ten of the world's oldest living people.

The oldest man ever is Jiroemon Kimura, also from Japan, who was born on 19 April 1897 and passed away aged 116 years 54 days on 12 June 2013. Tanaka is known to rise as early as 6 a.m. Tanaka also apparently enjoyed chocolates during her world record ceremony, AP said.

"One of Kane's favourite pastimes is a game of Othello and she's become an expert at the classic board game, often beating rest-home staff", Guinness said. And if you're wondering who the world's oldest person overall was, France's Jeanne Louise Calment lived quite a life.
